holiday business bookkeeping tips-2The holiday season is a hectic time of year, both in our personal and business lives. With the year coming to a close, there are going to be a whole lot of bookkeeping tasks that you’re going to need to get done, and you only have a few weeks of December before people start taking off and you have to put a hold on business until January.

Here are some ways that you can stay organized and meet all your bookkeeping obligations during this holiday season:

  • Focus on debt collection. This isn’t to say that you need to be a Scrooge this holiday season, but you do need to make sure that you have enough cash flow to get you through the busy holiday season and moving forward into January and February, which tend to be slower months for many businesses. Get your debts collected before the holidays and you won’t have to stress out over them during the actual holidays themselves. Then you’ll be able to start the new year with a fresh book without having to worry about what happened in the last year.
  • Be sure your budget takes holiday expenses into account. There’s a good chance you might have some additional spending around the holiday season, whether it’s for additional holiday-themed marketing or for spreading some of the seasonal cheer around the office. Make sure that it all fits within your budget and that you are keeping your spending to a reasonable amount.
  • Save while your business is closed. When you shut down over the holidays themselves, make sure that you are saving money by shutting down all non-essential systems and turning down the heat to lower levels. One full week of not using these utilities could offer you some good savings that could help to make up for any additional spending your business does during the holiday season.
  • Give back. The holiday season is a good time to show your appreciation to your clients, employees and community. Personal cards or emails or charitable donations to local organizations will buy your business some good will and are a great way to improve morale within your company.
